There is something especially beautiful about seeing Los Angeles before the city fully awakens. For Pam and Shawn’s Griffith Observatory engagement photos, we met early in the morning while spring fog still rested over the hills and the usual crowds had yet to arrive.

The hazy skyline, pale architecture, and nearly empty terraces gave the Observatory an entirely different feeling. Quiet and cinematic, the morning offered Pam and Shawn space to settle into the experience and simply be present with one another.

A Quiet Morning Above Los Angeles

Pam and Shawn live in Los Angeles, but their wedding would take them across the country to New Hampshire later that year. Photographing their engagement session here allowed us to preserve a piece of the city that belongs to their everyday life before documenting the next part of their story in New England.

They originally found my work through Facebook, and this was their first professional photo session together. Like many couples, they arrived with a little nervousness about being in front of the camera—but that feeling quickly disappeared.

Rather than relying on rigid poses, I gave them room to walk, talk, and move through the Observatory together. We paused beneath its sculptural arches, wandered along the terraces, and let the session unfold through conversation and the small ways they naturally reached for one another.

Cinematic Engagement Photos at Griffith Observatory

The Observatory’s Art Deco, Greek architecture gave us a beautiful sense of structure without overwhelming the photographs. Pam’s white dress stood out against its pale exterior, while Shawn’s dark suit introduced a timeless contrast.

Beyond them, the fog softened nearly everything. Familiar views of Los Angeles and the Hollywood Sign appeared suspended in the distance, giving the photographs a subdued, cinematic quality. Some moments were intentionally composed; others emerged from movement, affection, and the quiet exchanges happening between them.

That balance is always at the center of my approach. Photographs can feel thoughtful and visually distinct while remaining honest to the people within them. Pam and Shawn’s session became a mixture of polished portraits and genuinely lived moments—refined, affectionate, and unmistakably theirs.

Planning a Griffith Observatory Engagement Session

Timing can completely transform a Griffith Observatory engagement session. The grounds generally become busiest later in the day, particularly around sunset. Meeting early gave us quieter terraces, softer light, and far more room to create without competing with the usual crowds.

Weather will always introduce an element of unpredictability. On this particular morning, the fog concealed some of the expansive city views we might otherwise have seen. It also became one of the most memorable elements of the photographs. Rather than waiting for a conventional clear day, we embraced what the morning gave us and created something that could not have been repeated in quite the same way.
